My work is always environment inspired and dependent. The idea and the image take shape within the harmony of a particular place and it’s surroundings. My focus is on how the viewers interact physically and mentally with the object I create, which often results in broadening the boundaries between the artwork and the viewers.

For a public setting, the collaboration becomes the most important aspect of the creation. I work with architects, landscape designers, facility managers, other agents who are involved and most importantly the community. The input from the community and others help to visualize the concept, to create artwork that blends into the environment and to be appreciated by the community. Researching the historical, geographical, and cultural background of the site and community is also an important element.

My visual aesthetic is strongly influenced by my Japanese roots. The simplicity of composition, the harmony within a space, and the relationship between the piece and the viewer, inherent in Japanese Zen gardens and traditional Sumi paintings, are the elements that I try to incorporate into my work. The negative space created by carefully leaving it empty is as important as the positive space created by the placement of objects. This balance and the interplay between the positive and negative space often reflect the environments that we live in.

Basic elements of life such as air, water, wind, space and time are suggested in most of my work as well. The circle symbolizes water and it’s rippling motion, movement of line is for wind, soft fabric is for air, and the combination of all provides a sense of time and space. Repeated patters bring a feeling of uniformity. A subtle placement of the above elements moves the viewer’s eye from one place to another.

My fundamental idea of installation is to redefine and transform ordinary space into “unordinary” space. I invite the viewer to have a personal, intimate and direct relationship with my work and by stepping into the space to become an integral part of the art.
